Forsmark spent fuel repository (KBS-3)
Forsmark spent fuel repository (KBS-3) is a repository facility operated by Svensk Kärnbränslehantering (SKB) in Sweden. Its capacity is not publicly disclosed.
The second deep geological repository for spent fuel anywhere to begin construction. Copper canisters in bentonite clay, about 500 metres down in granite — the KBS-3 method Finland also uses. The construction licence was approved in September 2022, surface works are under way, and an application for underground excavation followed in January 2025. Operation is expected in the early 2030s.
